Beilschmedia taraire

Tararie

Common canopy tree of northern North Island, often associated with kauri (Agathis australis), and pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa), and on basalt rocks and soils puriri (Vitex lucens).
Large, leathery, oval leaves have silvery underneath. Although its flowers are inconspicuous the fruit is very large, dark purple and glossy. Can grow up to 20metres high so does require a good amount of space but worth having in your garden to attract the kereru.
Tolerates most soil types and coastal areas, prefers to be protected from heavy frost.
