The Tutukaka Land Care and Kiwi Coast held a very successful trapping workshop at Tawapou in January 2017. Instead of enjoying a sunny day at the beach 93 keen land owners turned up to learn from our local professional predator trappers how to be more successful with trapping and learn new skills. Thanks so much to Mike Camm (Tutukaka Land Care) and Ngaire Tyson (Kiwi Coast) for making this worthwhile event happen.
Three new community groups will form as a result of this event which means more gaps filled on the Kiwi Coast!
Cameron and Clayton McInnes from Carex Ecological Services shared their knowledge with the enthusiastic crowd. Also there and available to answer questions was Pete Graham and Don McKenzie from Northland Regional Council Biosecurity team along with Nan Pullman from the Queens Elizabeth 11 National Trust. We were very fortunate to have these expereinced trappers willing to share their invaluable knowledge with the crowd.
Feedback from the event:-
Hi Sandy, Quinn, our 7 year old, came along to the talk today at Tawapou with Shell, he’s always been interested in rat trapping and Kiwis. He absolutely loved it and hasn’t stopped talking about it all day. Linda gave him one of her traps and we set it as soon as he got home and then all the way home from Sandy Bay tonight he chatted away with all that he learnt about possums, rats, stoats and wild cats.
Thanks for putting the information out there, its so important for the community and especially our tamariki. Please also pass this on to Guy and those who did the talk.
Cheers,
Cass
Thanks everyone for your wonderful support in keeping our coast predator free!!
