Phormium cookianum is found throughout New Zealand, coastal, scrubland, tussockland and along streamsides. Drooping leaves.

Phormium cookianum 'Mayor Island' is a cultivar of the native New Zealand mountain flax or Wharariki. The cultivar has drooping leaves and does best in full sun or semi-shade. The plant is wind hardy and because of its rapid growth rate it is great for erosion control. The Mayor Island can reach a height of up to 1m and a spread of 1m. Very wind hardy and coastal tolerant. Looks great contrasting against grasses or mass planted.

This flax is more suited to garden surrounding the house than Phormium tenax as it dosn't grow as large and gives a much more softer appearance.
