Divaricating shrub gowing 2-3m high found Hamner Springs.

Sophora prostrata is native to the dry eastern side of the Southern Alps. This small, tense, tangled wiry Kowhai grows up to 2m tall with zig-zagging branches and is very hardy.The branches are golden coloured and the small flowers which appear in late spring are hidden amongst them. The colour of the flowers is sometimes more orange than yellow in comparison to other Kowhai species.

Slow growing. Tough on exposed, cold and dry sites.
