Small tree with attractive red stems, grows approx 3m high and is very hardy.
Myrsine australis is a common bushy tree endemic to New Zealand and throughout offshore Islands, also commonly reffered to as mapou or mapito.
Naturally grows on bush margins, regenerating and mature forests in coastal and sometimes montane areas. Easy to distinguish because of its crinkle edged leaves, reddish bark and stems.
Between August and January the tree produces small cream and white flowers followed by clusters of purple black berries which attract native birds. Māori would boil the mapou leaves to make a tea that would help toothaches.
Plant in either full sun or part shade, the tree is tolerant of coastal conditions most climates.
