Found coastal areas, small tree with highly fragrant flowers.

Melicope ternata is a small, evergreen coastal tree also known as Wharangi. Naturally the tree is distributed between the North Cape down to Nelson and is found growing in coastal to lowland forest. The tree can reach a height of up to 5m and it known to have a fast growth rate. Wharangi has glossy green trifoliate foliage that has a citrus smell when the leaves are crushed. Small yellowish green flowers develop in early spring followed by clusters of dry brown capsules containing black shiny seeds in late summer.

The bright foliage and fast growth rate makes the tree ideal for mixed plantings. Wharangi can be frost tender but will handle most conditions with sun and semi-shade.
