Attractive dark purple/red flowers through spring. The largest growing fuchsia in the world, found throughout NZ.

Fuchsia excorticata is a native New Zealand tree that is considered as the worlds largest fuchsia. Also commonly referred to as Kotutuhu, the native tree is one of New Zealand's very few try deciduous trees. Found growing alongside creeks and rivers in the North Island as far south as the Auckland Islands. Small flowers appear in August and change from a greensih yellow colour to purple red, the nectar attracts honey eating birds. Not long after the flowers appear dark purple edible fruit also known to Maori as konini appear and are said to taste like tamarillos.

The Fuchsia excorticata does best in semi shade, rich moist soil and sheltered positions. Distinctive because of its orange brown bark that looks like peeling paper.
