Astelia banksii has drooping narrow silvery leaves which offer a striking effect. An ideal plant for rock gardens and coastal conditions.
A. banksii grows up to 1 metre high forming large clumps. It is an evergreen silver-green plant from the beaches of New Zealand which prefers partial shade and infertile, well-drained soil. It producing attractive pink fruit, an additional feature.
There are twenty-five species of Astelia, thirteen of which are endemic to New Zealand. Astelia can be grown either as epiphytes or in the ground and they also grow well in container.
