Handsome tree found swampy areas Throughout North Island, west coast of South Island.

Laurelia novae-zelandiae is a large handsome buttress rooted native tree found in swampy forests and gullies throughout the North Island and the west coast of the South Island. Also known as Pukatea and has pairs of oval glossy dark green toothed leaves. Can reach a height of 40m but in a garden situation it is more commonly between 6-10m. During October through to December small greenish flowers appear.

Laurelia novae-zelandiae does best in wetter sites on edges of streams or lakes. Can be a good for stabilizing banks because of its shallow root system.
