Griselinia lucida is a native New Zealand plant is found in forest and coastal regions throughout New Zealand though it grows naturally as an epiphyte in the forest but it will also grow well as a shrub in cultivation. Also known as Akapuka, the small tree or shrub can grow up to 5m in height and 2m in spread. Its large thick and glossy green leaves give the plant a tropical aesthetic. Fruit appears in August and ripens to a dark purple colour which attracts native birds.

In terms of planting this species is very popular as a hedging or screening plant. Tolerant of both sun and semi shade the Akapuka is good in coastal conditons however can be frost tender.
