Dicksonia squarrosa is the most common tree fern in New Zealand. The hardy tree fern is found distributed across New Zealand forests. Few green fronds (1.5- 3m) sprout from the top of the slender brown trunk which can reach a height of 6m. The fronds horizontal growth gives the tree a large spread that needs to be accommodated when planting.
The fast growth rate and hardy nature of the Dicksonia squarrosa makes one of the most popular native tree ferns. The fern will thrive in sun and semi shade and is very tolerant of both wet and dry environments. The trunks of the tree fern are commonly used for fencing or edging.
