Rewarewa saved
It has been really nice to get some feedback from one of the many groups we gave plants away to during the winter, (please see letter below). What a wonderful effort by these not so young people to get them all planted and growing, thanks for sharing this with us John and Nancy.
Hello Sandra and Guy
I thought I would give you a brief update on recent conservation plantings at our Kiripaka (Ngunguru) site for which you were able to supply a significant number of plants without charge. This site is part of a mosaic of privately owned properties, which is supported by the Northland Regional Council's Environment Fund. These properties are a significant kiwi sanctuary.
We planted out 95 rewarewa in July 2010 on quite steep terrain with a cold southern exposure. The planting was into "adolescent" regenerating manuka on ground had been grazed by cattle and goats by previous owners.
These were quite large specimens in PB 3 bags. On average, the rewarewa have added 25 cm of new growth within ten weeks of planting. You will see in the attached photo my hand is holding one specimen, which is at the bottom of the new growth.
Many thanks.
John Beauregard
